Expanded Serial Set in LexisNexis Congressional

The University of Chicago Library recently acquired a campus-wide subscription to the LexisNexis Serial Set Digital Collection, 1970-2003, which expands our previous (1789-1969) access to the digitized U.S. Congressional Serial Set. The Serial Set includes House and Senate documents and reports, Senate executive reports, and Senate treaty documents. This addition will fill in some gaps in our online access to some important Congressional documents. For example, House and Senate Reports between 1969 and 1990 were previously unavailable online, and this will fill in that gap.

LexisNexis is digitizing this collection incrementally on a chronological basis, and they have already added documents up through the mid-1980s. LexisNexis plans to complete the project by the middle of this year. The Serial Set Digital Collection, which includes full-text searchable PDFs, is fully integrated into LexisNexis Congressional and can be searched by keyword, committee name, or citation.

When complete, the collection will provide comprehensive, full-text access to over 50,000 Congressional documents and reports published in over 2,600 volumes of the Serial Set from 1970-present. The Serial Set Digital Collection also provides full text access to all Senate Executive Documents and Reports, 1817-1979.

Today's D'Angelo Law Library workshop topic is "Tracking Current Legislation: What’s the 111th Congress Doing?" at 12:15 pm in Classroom B.  We will look at some online resources for tracking federal legislation, including subscription sources and those freely available on the web.  If you aren't able to attend, you should take a look at the Library's bill-tracking and federal legislative history guides online, or stop by the Reference Desk.

Conference Report for the stimulus package bill is now online...

The Legislative Source Book (http://www.llsdc.org/sourcebook ) of the Law Librarians' Society of Washington, DC has posted a PDF of the complete Conference Report, H. Rep. 111-16, to H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Conference Report is also available at these other sites:

• GPOAccess Congressional Record webpage (http://www.gpoaccess.gov/crecord ): key in the search "Conference Report on H.R. 1" (with the quotation marks).  There are 5 parts to the Report.
• The February 12, 2009 Congressional Record on THOMAS as a 2.5 MB text file.
• The House Rules Committee (http://rules.house.gov ) and the Office of the Speaker (http://www.speaker.gov/blog/?p=1694 ) have the Conference Report in four 6 MB parts.

LexisNexis' Congressional Hearings Digital Collection is complete...

LexisNexis has completed its Congressional Hearing Digital Collection - it now includes every published and unpublished Congressional hearing from 1824 forward, searchable in a single search.  See D'Angelo Law Library webpage > Quick Links > LexisNexis Congressional > Congressional Publications > Advanced Search and select Hearings (1824-present).

NEW Daily Compilation of Presidential Documents

With the new presidential administration comes a new online source of official documents released by the White House press secretary.  The new Daily Compilation of Presidential Documents will provide online access to presidential documents. Both the new Daily Compilation, and its predecessor the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents, are available at www.presidentialdocuments.gov. President Obama's Inaugural Address also is available at this site.

U.S. Code Available in PDF on HeinOnline

This is the week for exciting news about the United States Code.  HeinOnline has digitized the U.S.C. going back to the 1925-1926 edition and made it available in a browsable and searchable form with individual documents in PDF format. Titles 1-25 of the 2006 edition are now available.  Go here for the main page of the United States Code or here to retrieve a law by U.S.C. citation.

2006 U.S. Code now available online at GPOAccess!

The U.S. Code, 2006 Edition, is now available on GPOAccess. See http://www.gpoaccess.gov/uscode/index.html .

GPO Access contains the 2006, 2000, and 1994 editions of the U.S. Code, plus annual supplements. Documents are available only as ASCII text files.  The Government Printing Office is working on the print version of the 2006 Code; Volumes 1-17 (Titles 1-26) are in the DLL Reading Room.  Remaining volumes will arrive as they are published.
