Maroon Opinions

The University of Chicago Library's suggestions and comments.

A Note: Comments about specific staff members

In the past few weeks, the Suggestions Office has received several comments about various Library staff members. All of these submissions have been anonymous.

While we appreciate the feedback, we hope the submitter(s) understand that often we can't blog comments mentioning specific employees. So if you'd like a response, please include your contact info so we can email you directly.

Some Words About Comments

By popular demand, we've enabled comments on recent posts. You'll need to either have a TypeKey account or pass a Captcha filter to post a comment; more stringent measures may also come into play.

The Office staff have neither the time nor inclination to excessively screen comments, but nonetheless we (1) reserve the right to delete any comment for any reason at any time,  (2) to ban commenters and/or turn off comments entirely if this experiment goes awry. Don't screw it up for others, OK? Oh, and not all comments (if any!) reflect Library policy.

Also, please continue to use the form for new suggestions, even if the issue is substantially the same as an older post. (Among other things, you're likely to get an answer more quickly via the form.)

We're looking forward to your comments....

Doors and Comments

Re: "East Doors of the Reg":

"POSTSCRIPT: For those wondering about the southern door of the east entrance, and it's annoying tendency to lock shut at inopportune times -- we're aware of this, and have asked Facilities to come persuade the door to be more accommodating."

Or you could just leave it as is:

P.S. Can you turn on commenting for "Maroon Opinions?" Typepad should have an LDAP authentication if you want to restrict it to CNetIDs.

Regarding the door: it's tempting, but the Reg already presents its fair share of challenges in this area.

As for comments: Six Apart has LDAP support in Movable Type, but doesn't seem to offer it for Typepad. (We'd be happy to be proven wrong on this.)

More generally, we were worried that enabling comments would invite spam. But we may have been overly cautious, so as an experiment we've opened comments on all recent posts (i.e., those in July and August), plus any new ones. You'll need either to authenticate using TypeKey, or get through the Captcha filter, but once you've cleared that hurdle feel free to comment away.

Free Publicity

Maroon Opinions was recently mentioned on the RSS4Lib weblog and the Web4lib listserv. While we sometimes make jokes in the Suggestions Office about "our two external readers" (hi Mom and Dad), it's good to have reminders of a wider audience. Thanks, guys!

Keep those suggestions coming!
