Maroon Opinions

The University of Chicago Library's suggestions and comments.

Book Spam

This past summer I attended a talk that was given by a visiting professor (Dr. Wildberger) about a new book he had written on a revolutionary approach to trigonometry which will greatly simplify its study. I was very impressed with his theories, and am wondering if this book will be made available at Berea College. It is called ?Divine Proportions: Rational Trigonometry to Universal Geometry? and it seems to have created quite a stir in the field of mathematics. I am a graduate from many years ago, but continue to have a great interest in the subject. It can be viewed at the publisher's website; where select chapters can be downloaded along with other info.

Unfortunately, I have no idea if Berea College will order the book. Why don't you ask them?

Also, the University's alumni office claims you don't exist. You might want to contact them and get this cleared up.

[Booksellers: please proofread your form letters before sending them out... errors tend to make us very uninterested in buying your stuff.]

Unsolicited Manuscripts

I am an Iranian researcher in cultural & art studies. I wrote a book about one of the religion in Iran that called Ahle Hagh .(please see the attachment)

This research is very important and new in the world but I can not present it in Iran .in this research is new explanation about the poems of Hafez and Molana & so there is a few news about the events in the world in the future. I interest send it for a center of oriental & Iranian studies to publishing .please guide me what can I do?

If I send it in Persian can you translaite it in English ?

Unfortunately, the Library does not publish any books, nor do we offer translation services from Persian to English.

For fun, I looked up the submission guidelines of the University of Chicago Press:  http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/infopage.html in case anyone is interested in submitting a manuscript...

Add my Website!

I would like to suggest my website for your internet listings [website deleted]

We are always happy to review websites for possible inclusion in our subject pages. However, adding a website does represent an investment beyond merely bookmarking the site, so we tend to be choosy in what we add. Here are some of our informal guidelines:

Subject: We devote most our collection-building energy to topics studied at the University. U of C researchers cover an astonishing variety of topics, but not everything is studied here. Thus, we don't spend much time looking for engineering websites, because we don't have an engineering school.

Sufficiency: Our patrons are busy people. We strive to collect all the resources they will need, but not to overwhelm them with long pages of links. If there are 20 equally good websites covering a subject, we are probably going to choose 2-3 sites (and, all other things being equal, give preference to sites associated with the University). If people need more, there is always Google.

Sustainability: We like websites that look like they will stick around for a while and not go stale. ("a while" means a few years, not a few months.)

Finally, we may not list a site due to its access policy. While fee-for-access or "subscription required" sites don't get automatically rejected, the review bar becomes much higher if we have to pay money. (Since it comes out of the same budget, how many new books must we give up in order to have access to the site?)

If we do decide the site is worth some cash, we really really prefer to negotiate a flat fee and do authentication via IP address, rather than deal with user passwords. If you want to encourage our patrons to set up "custom profiles" or such, that's fine--but don't require a password.
